Rievaulx Abbey

Rievaulx Abbey
By Helmsley. This Cistercian abbey was headed by the Abbot of Rievaulx, one of the wealthiest abbey's in England. The Abbey was closed down by Henry VIII of England in 1538. Its ruins are now a top tourist attraction. Phone number 03703 331 181.

St Mary's Abbey

St Mary's Abbey
York. This ruined Benedictine abbey are situated in the Yorkshire Museum Gardens, close to York Minster Cathedral. The original abbey here was built around 1055, dedicated to Saint Olave.

Whitby Abbey image

Whitby Abbey
Whitby. The original abbey here was built around 657 AD for the Anglo-Saxon King of Northumbria, Oswy. That building was destroyed by Viking raids in 867. The building that can be seen today, was built around 1078. Phone number 03703 331 181.
