Slide of Hawkshead
Hawkshead attracts many visitors for
its connections to the writers William Wordsworth and Beatrix
Potter. After the death of William
Wordsworth mother at their home in
Penrith in 1778, William and his brother
Richard were sent to lodge with Mr & Mrs
Tyson in the village of Hawkshead, where
they attended the Grammar School in
Hawkshead from 1779 - 1787. The Tyson Cottage now serves as a
B&B property that can be viewed from
Wordsworth Street, Large Image.
After attending St. John's College in
Cambridge, William lived at Dove
Cottage in Grasmere 1799 - 1808, then
Alan Bank
in Grasmere 1808 - 1810, then Rydal Mount in
Rydal by Grasmere from 1813 till his
death in 1850. He is Buried in St Oswald's
Church in Grasmere.
Beatrix Potter grew up in
London and became famous for her
children's books such as The Tale of
Peter Rabbit. At the age of 39, she
bought Hill Top Farm in the
small village of Near Sawrey, 2 miles
southeast of Hawkshead. She married a
solicitor from Hawkshead named William
Heelis at the age of 47. William Heelis
home in Hawkshead now serves as the
Beatrix Potter Gallery.
Potter published over 23 books and
bought a number of sheep farms in the
Lake District. She died of pneumonia and
heart disease on the 22nd December 1943,
in her home named Castle Cottage at Near
Sawrey, aged 77. She was cremated at
Carleton Crematorium in Blackpool.
Potter left most of her property to
the National Trust. Much of this land is
now part of the Lake District National
Park.
