Beatrix Potter grew up in London and became famous for her children's books such as The Tale of Peter Rabbit. At the age of 39, she bought Hill Top Farm in the small village of Near Sawrey, 2 miles southeast of Hawkshead. She married a solicitor from Hawkshead named William Heelis at the age of 47.
