Where: Place Fell hike from Patterdale in
the Lake District of England
When: June 2014
Weather: Sunny
Height: 2,155ft
The Place Fell hike has some of the best
views in the Lake District of England. After
hiking to the top, you have great views down
over Patterdale, Glenridding and Ullswater
Lake.
The hike starts from Patterdale, that is
14 miles southwest of Penrith at the M6
motorway, so is also one of the easiest
mountains to get to.
The image below is of Place Fell from the
Glenridding Launch. This is one of the best
spots to view the mountain. The main trail
starts from the very small village of
Patterdale, mile further down the
road.

The image below is of the Patterdale Hotel,
with the hotels large car park across the
road, left in the image below. The car park
is a pay and display park.
From this car park, walk 300 yards south
following the main road. There is a roadside
path all the way.
|
The image below is of the White Lion
Inn, 100 yards south of the Patterdale
Hotel. There is another pay and display car
park at this inn.
|
The image below is looking back at the
White Lion Inn and the Patterdale Village
store across the road. Patterdale is mainly
the Hotel, the Inn, the Store, and a few
houses.
|
The image below is form just over 100
yards past the White Lion Inn and Patterdale
Store. The road there leads over a bridge and
into the area named Rooking. Follow the road
round to the left, behind the house over
there, then pick up the main trail from
there.
The main trail leads up from behind that
house, heading right in the image below, up
onto the south ridge, then back north to the
top.

This is another one of the hikes top of my
list for my next visit to the lake
district.
Make sure and take an Ordnance Survey Map
and Compass on these hikes, and know how to
use them, as in cloud, these mountains can be
deadly. In Winter, make sure you have
Crampons and an Ice Axe, and know how to use
them.
