Roman Army Museum

RS Home

The Roman Army Museum is by the village of Greenhead, 19 miles east of Carlisle, 40 miles west of Newcastle just off the B6318 road.

This is the top Museum along Harians Wall for large screen movies giving information on Roman life in the area.

The Museum is at Carvoran Roman Fort, although the fort has not been excavated, so you cannot see much of the fort.

The Museum is only a few hundred yards from one of the top sections of Hadrians Wall at Wallton Quarry.

The image below is of the museum entrance with a fairly large car park and tea room, with an entrance fee. The Hadrians Wall Bus visits here.

The image below is of Walltown Quarry only a few hundred yards up the narrow road from the Roman Army Museum.

Hadrians Wall runs over the high point up on the left of the image below. This is one of the best preserved sections of the wall, and top walking section with great views over the rugged hills.

It is about 4 miles from Walltown Quarry east to Cawfields Quarry, 9 miles to Housteads Roman Fort. Between Walltown Quarry and Housteads is the highest, best preserved, and most walked sections of the Hadrians Wall Path.

The Hadrian's Wall Bus runs between these three points, about 1 an hour, so is good for walking these top sections then getting the bus back to your car, or the town you are staying in.

The Roman Army Museum is run by the organization that runs Vindolanda Roman Fort and Museum 7 miles east, named the Vindolanda Charitable Trust. You can buy tickets for either, or tickets for both.
